Local nonprofit gives Georgians free help filing taxes

Atlanta, GA — Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, offers free tax preparation services to working families with moderate to low incomes.

“Our goal is to make sure that everybody that qualifies for the earned income tax credit and many of the other tax credits, actually receive all of their money that’s due to them,” said Economy Jackson, of United Way of Greater Atlanta.

Georgians get free help filing taxes through local program February 16, 2020

United Way is working with the Internal Revenue Service, community nonprofits and the city of Atlanta to offer the free tax services to people who generally make $56,000 a year or less.

“If you have kids, or you have low income, or you just don’t have the funds, this is the perfect place to come,” Clark Atlanta University student and VITA volunteer Tamira Momon said.

Momon and other Clark Atlanta students learned how to prepare returns in a university course. They are all IRS trained and certified. Together, they’re applying what they learned in class to real life in order to help others at one of VITA’s 20 metro Atlanta sites.
