6 companies chosen to manufacture medical marijuana oil in Georgia

ATLANTA — Six companies have been chosen to manufacture low-THC cannabis oil for medical use in Georgia, the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission announced Saturday.

Sixty-nine companies applied to be able to manufacture the oil. The commission announced Saturday that they have filed a notice of intent to license six companies.

Botanical Sciences LLC and Trulieve GA Inc. will be awarded Class 1 production licenses, which will allow the companies to allocated more than 100,000 feet for growing space.

TheraTrue Georgia LLC , Natures GA LLC, FFD GA Holdings LLC and Treevana Remedy Inc. have been chosen to receive Class 2 production licenses, which will allow them to allocate 50,000 feet for growing space.

Cannabis oil patients must be registered with the Georgia Department of Public Health to obtain the oil from licensed dispensaries or specially licensed pharmacies. Licensing six companies to produce it will finally give families a legal way to obtain it.

“It’s a great day for Georgians who need access to low-THC oil, and their families who have advocated a quality of life for their loved ones,” said Dr. Christopher Edwards, chair of the commission.

Two years ago, the Georgia General Assembly passed House Bill 324, which allows patients to access medical cannabis oil with no more than 5% THC.

The legislation, dubbed “Georgia’s Hope Act,” also allows the commission to issue up to six licenses to private companies to grow cannabis under close supervision of the state.

“This is a big step in the right direction, and the announcement of the six companies is an indication that help is on the way for Georgians,” said Danielle Benson, Vice-chair of the cannabis commission.
