APS board approves new elementary school in midtown

ATLANTA — A new elementary school will open next year in midtown despite opposition from some parents.

The Atlanta Board of Education voted 7-1 to launch a new K-5 school that would open in the Virginia Highland neighborhood, in the old Inman Park Middle School building.

About 850 students from Springdale Park, Mary Lin and Morningside elementary schools will be rezoned.

A group of parents opposed the rezoning in May, citing concerns with the social, emotional and academic impact to students who experienced disruptions already during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’m sad and disappointed in the way APS handled this,” said Lisa Luber, a Morningside Elementary School parent.

APS says the new school will address overcrowding in the schools in midtown.
