Candidates for Atlanta’s mayor officially getting their names on the ballot

ATLANTA — Tuesday was the first day candidates vying to be Atlanta’s mayor could officially qualify to run and get their names on the ballot.

Channel 2′s Richard Elliot spoke with three of the candidates who qualified for the race Tuesday and they all say that they are ready.

Supporters of City Council President Felicia Moore and supporters of former mayor Kasim Reed faced off in front of City Hall, trying to drown one another out as their candidates were inside qualifying for the election.

Moore exited the building first and tried to give her campaign speech, but was drowned out by Reed supporters who kept on chanting.

“I hope the other candidate is letting you know that they’re not a respectful group of people when they don’t allow the other candidates to have their voice,” Moore said.

Reed came out moments later as the first person to ever run for Atlanta Mayor three times.

He says he is ready for a tough campaign against tough opponents.

“I think we’re going to have a big healthy conversation over the next few months. I think folks are looking forward to it,” Reed said.

Hours later, City Councilman Andre Dickens showed off his qualification papers. He says they have a short time to do a lot of campaigning.

“We’re talking to everybody, raising money. I’m ready to get to the finish line and become the next mayor of Atlanta,” Dickens said.

Other candidates like attorney Sharon Gay and City Councilman Antonio Brown have announced their intent to run. Both are expected to officially qualify soon.
