Channel 2′s Convoy of Care already sending water to storm-ravaged Texas, working to send more

ATLANTA — Texans are still reeling from the recent winter storm, and help is on the way from metro Atlanta.

Channel 2 Action News’ Convoy of Care is once again on the move, this time to help victims of the recent winter storm in Texas.

At the Caring for Others warehouse in southeast Atlanta, they are storing lifesaving supplies that will soon be shipped out.

Pallets full of drinking water are waiting to be loaded onto a tractor-trailer and hauled to the Lone Star State.

Professional trucker Herschel Evans has been behind the wheel for trips back and forth from metro Atlanta to Texas.

“We left this past Monday and went down with a load to a children’s hospital in Austin,” Evans said. “They’ve taken over half-a-million pounds of water down there already. 10 or 11 trucks already went into the area from our relationship with the trucking industry.”

TRENDING STORIES:

WSB-TV has partnered with several organizations to send aid, but because of the pandemic, in-person donations of essential supplies are not possible.

For now, giving has to be done remotely. The funds are used to purchase what is needed, which is then loaded onto trucks driven by haulers like Evans.

“The problem down there with having their municipal water out is it’s not something you can see from the street. The water is out. You don’t know it. Nobody’s got clean water,” Evans said. “You pull into a town that has been ravaged by a hurricane, a tornado, a flood -- in this case I think it’s our first ice storm -- that’s probably a first for the Convoy of Care. To get to be able to do this and pull in and give them something they desperately need, it makes you feel good. You know what you’re doing is making a difference.”

Two truckloads have already been delivered and we are hoping to be able to take several more.
