Kemp qualifies to run for reelection for governor

ATLANTA — Gov. Brian Kemp is now qualified to run for reelection.

Kemp was joined at the State Capitol by his family and a large group of supporters as he made his reelection campaign official.

But Thursday is just the beginning of a long road ahead for the governor.

“We are here because we have a lot more wood to chop. We are in a fight for the soul of our state,” Kemp said.

Before talking to supporters inside the Capitol, Kemp qualified for reelection by filing his paperwork with his family by his side.

“We’ve been waiting on this day for three years. What we’re going to have to overcome to win the nomination, we’re not taking (anything) for granted,” Kemp said.

Kemp acknowledged he had a tough road ahead.

First, there will be a primary fight against former Sen. David Perdue.

We were there when Perdue qualified on Wednesday and insisted he’s the candidate who can bring the Republican party together.

“Look I’ve said this about 500,000 times over the past two years. I can’t control what other people are doing in politics, whether it’s my opponent, whether it’s people who are endorsing him. I’m focused on doing what Georgians want,” Kemp said.

If Kemp survives the primary, he then faces a rematch with Democrat Stacey Abrams, who also qualified earlier this week.

“We know the Democrats are going to line up behind her. I’m the best candidate to beat her in November. Conservatives across the state realize that,” Kemp said.
