MARTA will increase security, says no credible threats following NYC subway attack

ATLANTA — The police chief of MARTA said there have been no credible threats against the metro Atlanta transit system following a mass shooting at a subway station in Brooklyn New York.

“We also have not had any reports from any other transit agencies of any other attacks like the one this morning,” MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher said.

Kreher said he has been in constant contact with transit officials in New York and with the Transportation Safety Administration to calculate the threat of a coordinated or copycat attack on another transit system. He said investigators so far say there is no evidence that the mass shooting in New York was a terrorist attack.

He also said security would be increased in and around MARTA stations

“We will have increased patrols along the rail systems to include K-9 units, our special operations officers and undercover officers” Kreher said.

Some MARTA riders said while the attack in New York is alarming, they believe MARTA is safe and will continue using it.

“This is public transit. It’s to help us get from point A to point B. We have to pull together and help each other,” passenger Tracy Burnett said.

MARTA is urging riders to be vigilant and quickly report anything that poses a potential threat.
