President Biden, first lady visit Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter ahead of metro Atlanta rally

PLAINS, Ga. — Before holding a rally in metro Atlanta to celebrate his first 100 days in office, President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden stopped in Plains, Georgia on Thursday to visit another president and first lady -- Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.

Channel 2′s Berndt Peterson was in Plains as dozens of people lined the main drag through town as the president’s limo with the police cars all around it came through.

One lady told Petersen that the meeting in her hometown is the kind of story you tell the grandkids.

“It was really awesome. The word is awesome,” said Varnice Sutton.

“It’s very exciting. I was here when Jimmy Carter was first elected. It was exciting then and having this happen again is just a thrill,” said Trudy Phillips.

The love locals have for Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn is very special. They say it’s fitting that Biden travelled there to call on the ultimate elder statesman.

Biden and Carter have a long history. When Carter first moved into the White House in 1977, Biden was in his first term in the U.S. Senate.

Because COVID-19 prevented the Carters from attending the January inauguration in Washington, Biden decided to come to them.

In the meantime, along Church Street in their folding chairs, the ladies of Plains still agree that the president’s visit was a piece of history.

“They both are great presidents. President Carter and President Biden,” Sutton said.

The ladies also told Petersen they would have loved to be a fly on the wall in that room when the presidents met.
