Teachers at local elementary school surprised with free classroom supplies

ATLANTA — Kindergarten teacher Taylor Godwin says a recent shopping trip for school supplies wasn’t a whole lot of fun.

“Ouch! I know I need certain things,” Taylor said.

Necessary school supplies like markers, notepads, tissues, you name it, cost way more this year. But Taylor and all 25 of the homeroom teachers at Garden Hills Elementary in Buckhead were surprised with all these supplies for free.

Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen spoke with some of the teacher’s assistants, and they spoke about how much of a burden was lifted.

“We’re going shopping! It’s Christmas,” 3rd-grade teacher Rasheda Aquil said.

Georgia’s Own Credit Union adopted this school and donated $3000 worth. Items most educators would otherwise have to buy themselves.

A national survey found that teachers spend up to $750 a year out of their own pockets.

“You get the school supply list at the beginning of the year, and you think this should cost around 50 dollars. Then you get there, and it’s 100,” the credit union’s Marin Kraushaar said.

This school budgets for supplies, so teachers and parents don’t have to buy it all themselves.

“But it’s not these fancy markers and things. So, it’s really nice to be able to give them a little bit extra,” Principal Stacey Abbott said.

It’s hard to cover it all.

“Even if we have some stuff in our room, we always need more. We have to restock. So it really does help a lot that we have stuff donated,” Taylor said.

The credit union told Channel 2 they hope to take it up a notch next year and adopt even more schools to help out.
