Metro Atlanta time capsule contains life stories, words of wisdom from seniors

VILLA RICA, Ga. — Connie Shelton believes she has learned a thing or two in her 85 years.

“Always remember that love and respect go hand in hand,” she read.

She wanted to put it on paper.

“It was like going down memory lane,” Shelton said.

Susie Burdett is 88 and grew up on a farm.

“We didn’t have heat. Didn’t have running water. Didn’t have a telephone,” Burdett said.

Neither did 94-year-old Winfred Eison.

“We would look under my bedroom floor and see the chickens under there,” Eison laughed.

They now live at The Birches of Villa Rica senior living community, where more than 15 residents decided to write some letters.

“They wanted to share stories about their lives and about the changes, but also give some words of wisdom,” Birches Executive Director Rita Miller Davis said.

It’s all going into a time capsule to be buried in The Birches front yard.

The letters include a little story about the first time Shelton saw television.

“It was a tiny screen,” she said.

She’ll never forget what was on - Howdy Doody.

But Shelton and her friends also have some advice for the ones who will one day open the time capsule - good advice.

“Be kind. Practice grace. Think happy thoughts,” Shelton said.

The Birches at Villa Rica will bury the time capsule when the weather warms up a little more.

It is not to be opened for 50 years.
