Concern raised with reckless driving in front of Clayton County elementary school

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga — A mother pulled out her cellphone and began recording when she saw drivers speeding and going into the oncoming traffic in front of an elementary school. She posted that video, and it got a quick response from the school district.

Eva Jane Bunkley showed Channel 2′s Tom Jones the video that she says shows there is a safety hazard in front of Church Street Elementary in Riverdale.

The video showed one car speeding by other cars and going into the opposite lane.

“But this fool. Look at this,” Bunkley said excitedly.

Bunkley recorded one car after another crossing double lines and going into oncoming traffic on Church Street, some almost hitting cars coming their way.

“We need police officers, somebody, directing this traffic,” she said in the video.

Bunkley says the cars traveled into oncoming lanes because traffic on the two-lane road was backed up with parents trying to pick up their children at the school.

“It was a situation where I was like, we don’t need to have a crash out here,” the concerned mother said.

Bunkley says drivers were impatient and chose to take a chance going into the wrong lane. “They saw traffic coming and kept going — just didn’t care, head-on. It was crazy,” she said.

She says some drivers were even speeding in the school zone.

When Bunkley posted her video on social media, she says someone with the Clayton County School System saw it. The school system then posted a police officer outside as school let out.

Bunkley says that seemed to solve the problem.

“I was very relieved,” she said.

A Clayton County School System spokesperson sent Channel 2 the following statement:

“The Clayton County Schools Police Department is aware of the traffic issues adjacent to Church Street Elementary School. Due to the potential issue of the safety of our students, staff and visitors at the school, District police officers are aligning efforts with local law enforcement by implementing a focused response that includes assisting in the directing of traffic and having a visual presence at the school to encourage traffic safety.”
