Hundreds of flights canceled, delayed at world’s busiest airport

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A dense fog advisory forced a ground stop at the world’s busiest airport Sunday, delaying hundreds of flights and leading to cancellations.

FlightAware showed more than 1,500 delays and more than 200 cancellations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Sunday.

The impacts appear to have trickled in to Monday. As of 7:30 a.m., there have been at least 134 cancellations and 112 delays per FlightAware.

Channel 2’s Brittany Kleinpeter saw crowds of travelers waiting around baggage claim carousels on Sunday night for WSB Tonight at 11 p.m.

Delta, which is headquartered in Atlanta, experienced the most interruptions. Delta customer Frank Meed shared that after his flight was canceled, he was informed his bag would be returned to baggage claim.

“I’ve been in and out of here a bunch of times, but I’ve never seen it this bad,” said Meed.

Traveler Yasmin Saleh, who was trying to make her way back home to Tampa, said she had been waiting for her bag for hours.

“They’re telling us now it’s going to be three to four hours before we can get our bags, so we’re trying to figure out what to do,” Saleh explained.

The fog cleared out of the metro Atlanta area by mid-afternoon, but as a cold front moved in, some worried more disruptions could be brewing, while others weathered it for what it was.

“It’s annoying. There’s not much I can do about it. I just got to be patient until it’s resolved,” said Meed.

A Delta spokesperson said baggage teams are working to reunite customers with their bags after winter weather conditions in Atlanta. Customers can track checked bags in the Fly Delta app or on Delta.com.

Passengers with delayed bags can also file a baggage claim online or in person at the airport.
