Police say 20-year-old pulled gun on postal worker, stole key to mailboxes across Clayton County

HAMPTON, Ga. — A man who police say robbed a postal worker is now behind bars.

It all began on March 1 when Clayton County police were called to Tara Boulevard just after 12 p.m. in reference to an armed robbery.

The victim, a U.S. postal worker, told police the suspect robbed them at gunpoint, stole the mailbox key and took off running.

The suspect, later identified as Tavion Williams,20, was described as wearing a mask, and a black hoodie with bleached dye and was carrying a black and silver handgun.

Clayton County officers began swarming the area in an attempt to set up a perimeter to find Williams.

Body camera video shows the moment an officer spotted Williams walking down the access road near Home Depot wearing black sweatpants and a white T-shirt.

As the officer was attempting to check Williams for weapons, he began to run. While running, Williams was reportedly reaching into his pants.

He suddenly stopped and then sat on the ground.

Once authorities arrested Williams, they reportedly found a silver and black handgun in the crotch area of Williams’ pants.

Officials said a K9 was able to find the black hoodie with bleached dye discarded behind the Home Depot. Clayton officers said they also found the black mask and the victim’s keys with a chain.

Williams is charged with armed robbery and obstruction of law enforcement.
