Popular Georgia bakery, other businesses go up in flames

COWETA COUNTY, Ga — Coweta County fire crews continue to monitor hot spots after a historic building went up in flames.

It happened Wednesday evening. The Heirloom Bakery and several small businesses in Sharpsburg caught fire, destroying the buildings.

“It’s a landmark,” bakery customer Richard Smith told Channel 2′s Elizabeth Rawlins. “Just wanted to come see it.”

Investigators remained on the scene Thursday, investigating the cause and where it started.

“It could have been electrical, it could have been a candle,” Coweta County Fire Marshal Enrico Dean said. “We just don’t know at this point. The origin appears to be near the front door.”

The manager of the bakery declined to comment, but Rawlins spoke to an employee who said they are devasted because the damage is extensive.

“I wonder if they are going to rebuild,” Smith said.

The workweek suddenly looks a lot different for the businesses and employees, but the community is already rallying to help.

Several thousand dollars have already been collected through a GoFundMe account.
