DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Several families lost their homes after a fire ripped through a condominium complex early Friday morning.

Firefighters said they were called to the Northlake Manor Condos off Lawrenceville Highway around 7 a.m. to an active fire.

Crews had to use a ladder to save a man who was trapped on his second-floor balcony.

Antonie Evans gave Channel 2 Action News cell phone video of his condo building on fire. He said he and his fiancée, and two kids woke up to the smell of smoke. When they came outside, they saw flames shooting through the roof.

“Got the kids out the house, grabbed her, went back in to grab our phones but we lost everything, all of our clothes, computers… everything we had was in there,” Evans said.

Firefighters said DeKalb police arrested the man that was rescued, but they’re still investigating if the man had anything to do with the fire.

“When I was first walking into the complex, I saw them putting him into the back of the police car,” said neighbor Denevia Hicks.

Investigators said four condo units have heavy fire damage and an additional four units have smoke damage but thankfully no one was hurt.

“I’m just happy my family is OK, it’s just hurtful that we got start all over from the beginning,” Evans said.

Firefighters want to remind everyone to make sure your smoke detectors work and check to see if you have a fire extinguisher in your home.

The Red Cross said the fire displaced a total of 18 people. The group is helping provide temporary lodging, food, clothing and personal/health items.
