DeKalb commissioners vote to remove cannon monument from Decatur square

DECATUR, Ga. — DeKalb County commissioners voted Tuesday to remove a cannon monument from Decatur Square.

The Daughters of the Confederacy placed the cannon in the square in 1906. It memorialized the removal of indigenous people following the Creek War of 1836.

Channel 2′s Christian Jennings watched Tuesday’s virtual meeting where the vote was unanimous to remove the cannon monument.

“115 years is too long and we want it down now,” one protestor said.

On Monday, dozens marched through Decatur on Indigenous Peoples Day to push for the cannon’s immediate removal ahead of today’s meeting.

“Hey, hey, ho, ho, the genocide cannon has got to go,” protestors could be heard chanting.

The cannon has to be moved to a storage facility in the next 90 days. The groups who pushed for the removal want it done much faster.

The county says it is unclear who owns the cannon.

Last year, another Confederate monument was removed from Decatur square. The stone obelisk, which was created in 1908 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, was also moved to storage.

There is no word on if anything will be put in its place.
