SWAT standoff ends in DeKalb County neighborhood; 1 dead, 1 injured

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities have cleared a DeKalb County neighborhood after an hours-long standoff.

DeKalb police told Channel 2 Action News that officers were called out to a home around 5 a.m. Thursday in response to a person shot call. When they arrived, police said they learned the suspect shot a relative in the house during a “mental health crisis.”

That relative was taken to a local hospital.

SWAT was used to help remove other relatives out of the home.

When officers were able to make it inside the home, they found the suspect dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities closed parts of the road and evacuated the homes near the incident. Neighbors were told to get out of their homes in the early morning.

“I asked what was going on and they said, ‘It’s a serious situation going on next to house, so you guys have to evacuate,’” said neighbor Mohamade Hassan. “I was told early in the morning five o’clock.”

Hasan said he just moved next door a year ago. He said he and his neighbor only greeted each other and it was strange to hear this news.

“We never had any problems before but I was just surprised when I heard that,” Hasan said.
