Students make video of deteriorating conditions at DeKalb high school including mold, sewage

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Students said their DeKalb County high school is falling apart.

Students made a video showing poor conditions at Druid Hills High School. The issues include mold on the walls, bathrooms without doors and sewage flowing into lunch areas.

They’re already getting results. School district administrators said they’re putting this issue on the agenda for their upcoming meeting.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes spoke to some of these students who made the video.

“I feel like we definitely got the ball rolling, but we still have a lot of work to do,” senior Townes Purdy said.

Purdy was one of the students who made the eight-minute video that describes how his school needs some major renovations.

More than 16,000 people have watched the video on YouTube as of Wednesday morning.

Sophomore Harley Martz told Fernandes she had to be part of the video after her freshman brother said something she couldn’t forget.

“He toured a few weeks ago and the first thing he said was the building is kind of gross,” she said.

The students said DeKalb School Board members took their school off the renovations list.

When Fernandes took the students concerns to district administrators, they sent her a statement: “A proposal to renovate Druid Hills High School as part of the E-SPLOST VI project list is on the April 18 board agenda.”

The students are excited to think that their efforts are making a difference. They know they probably won’t see the changes, but they’re making a difference for the students who are coming up after them.
