Teenage siblings brought gun, box of ammo to metro Atlanta high school, police say

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Police arrested a pair of teenage siblings after they allegedly brought a loaded gun and a box of bullets into their school last month.

Administrators at Stephenson High School in DeKalb County say another student alerted them to the gun, and they were able to stop anything bad from happening.

There has been an increased presence from school police officers since the incident happened.

Many parents are left wondering what would have happened had another student not been brave enough to alert administrators.

“I don’t think it can be stopped, not unless they put metal detectors at doors or something like that,” parent Tracie Jeter told Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes.

Jeter’s son just graduated from the Stone Mountain school and will have two more there soon. She said Stephenson is normally a good school.

Other parents say the extra box of ammunition is just as concerning as the gun.

“So you didn’t just intend to unload that clip. You were trying to reload. So that’s deep,” said parent Alleah Lloyd.

School administrators say the siblings were charged with possession of a weapon in a school safety zone and were transported to juvenile intake.

Because the teenagers are minors, their names have not been released and administrators have not commented on the disciplinary actions taken by the school.

“I would wanna see if they could get counseling or something because I don’t understand what would make somebody feel like they need to do that,” Lloyd said. “It’s very scary to know that our children could be in danger in that way. You send them to school thinking they’re coming back.”
