95-year-old WWII veteran honored for serving fellow veterans

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Dozens gathered in Gwinnett County on Wednesday to honor a 95-year-old World War II veteran.

Robert Kopp not only served his county but also in his later years he has served fellow veterans.

Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen was in Buford where it was quite a tribute.

Daughters are naturally very proud of their dads. Jenna Kopp can go on and on about hers.

“My dad has always been an amazing father. I was the youngest of four. The only girl. I was a ‘daddy’s girl’ growing up,” Jenna Kopp said.

Robert Kopp joined the U.S. Army in the closing days of World War II and was sent to the Pacific. 

On Wednesday at Manor Lake Assisted Living, where he now lives, everyone admires the man known as Mr. Bob. 

Dozens gathered for a special tribute. 

“Sometimes it really comes down to saying thank you,” Dr. Adam Erwin of Hospice of Northeast Georgia said.

Robert says he’ll never forget his days as an army mail clerk and courier at the age of 18. 

“Well, it wasn’t exciting, but it was safe,” Robert said.

In recent years, he helped care for fellow WWII veterans as a volunteer for hospice. 

Robert will tell you the party and a little pat on the back is nice, but he very humbly explains that through it all, he was simply doing his duty. 

“I just think they went to way too much trouble for me. I don’t deserve it. I just did what I needed to do,” Robert said.
