Construction crew rebuilds family’s home for free after car plows into bedroom wall

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County family is getting some much-needed help after a car crashed into their mobile home, making it uninhabitable.

The driver died at the scene.

Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson was in Buford Wednesday, where a construction company was hard at work rebuilding walls of the home on Horizon Parkway.

Police said that around 9 p.m. Monday, a neighbor crashed into the home while seven family members, including a 3-year-old boy, were inside. Thankfully, the family was not seriously hurt.

Police identified the driver as 36-year-old Jordan Gonzalez. Neighbors said he lived with his family across the street from the house that police say he hit. It’s unclear what caused him to crash.

On Monday, a crew of 15 people from Big House Construction started repairs on the home, which they offered for free.

Builder Matthew Critten said that when he heard about the crash and that the family was displaced, he knew he had to step in.

“We knew how much of a priority it was to get them back in the home,” Critten said. “This is pretty much our passion. (I) basically got everyone into action, called my guys and they were all willing to jump right at tit to get to help them.”

Daniel Morales said he and his wife and three children don’t have insurance and worried if they would even be able to live in the house again.

“My family doesn’t have clothes, anything,” Morales said after the crash. “I don’t know what to do.”

On Tuesday, Big House Construction told the family they’d cover the estimate $15,000 job for free.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Morales said. ‘I was like, ‘Nah, probably they’re going to charge something, right?’”

The team said they’re just happy to be a part of the family’s road to recovery.

“We’re going to get the family back into their house, so it’s the best feeling ever,” Laura Smith with Big House Construction said.

They hope to get the family back home by the end of the week, or even as early as tomorrow. Once they’re back inside, the family said their main goal will be recovering physically and emotionally.
