Organizers say rising food costs are making the need greater than ever.

Channel 2′s Matt Johnson was in Norcross at the event that will feed hundreds of families.

For many families, this is the difference between having a Thanksgiving dinner and going without.

The timing of this event comes as a blessing for many.

Every bag of food given to someone at the store goes to someone who could use some help.

Lisa Presti says it’s what single-handedly saved Thanksgiving for her.

“It’s the only way I’m able to do anything with my daughter tomorrow,” said Presti.

The single mother is one of hundreds who are picking up fresh produce and thanksgiving meals from Goodr, a nonprofit that provides surplus food to organizations and communities in need.

Families who preregistered lined up in their cars at Lucky Shoals Park in Norcross, where the food is delivered without them having to get out.

“Dressing, macaroni and cheese, turkey or ham, salmon, dessert, everything you need for a good Thanksgiving meal,” Goodr member Sharon Riley said.

Organizers say every event is important, but the one before Thanksgiving is special as food prices continue to rise.

“With inflation and food prices, we’re seeing more and more people in need of food because they can’t afford it,” said Riley.

The cost of groceries is up 12% compared to last year, according to the Bueau of Labor Statistics.

Wednesday’s food giveaway in Norcross was the second one of the day in Gwinnett County.

“Goodr and the community just wants to fill that gap,” said Riley.

For Presti, getting the food for free was a surprise she can’t wait to share with her daughter.

“I will at least have something for her,” said Presti.

Two more Gwinnett County Goodr events are set for December, right before Christmas.
