Investigator accused of slipping 2 'unknown items' to notorious murder suspect in jail

BUTTS COUNTY, Ga. — An investigator who works with people in prison found herself locked up after she was accused of slipping two "unknown items" to one of Georgia's most notorious accused killers.

Channel 2's Mark Winne was the only reporter inside the Butts County jail Wednesday as Lily Engleman was booked and processed.

Winne learned that Engleman, who is an investigator for the Georgia Capital Defender's Council, is accused of passing contraband to inmate Ricky Dubose. He is one of two people charged with killing two state corrections officers on a prison bus in Putnam County in 2017.

An arrest warrant affidavit suggests it suspected that Engleman on Sept. 6 was

describes suspicions that Engleman, on Sept. 6, was "observed passing Ricky Dubose two small unknown items, that the inmate picked up from the floor and hid it in his socks."

Corrections officials said Engleman will be charged with "introducing contraband inside the guard line without permission from the Warden. The arrest stems from an ongoing investigation which began after it was discovered that Engleman was passing illegal contraband to the inmate during a visit at the SMU."

When Winne asked Engleman if she had anything to say about the allegations, she responded by saying, "No, I don't."

Engleman faced a judge after being processed in jail.

"Bond is granted in this case in a total of $5,000," said Magistrate Judge Megan Kinsey.

The judge ordered Engleman to not return to any of the state of Georgia Department of Corrections properties.

Engleman was released from jail hours later after posting bail.

The Georgia Public Defender Council told Channel 2 Action News it suspended Engleman Wednesday afternoon while the agency conducts an investigation into her arrest.

Corrections officials said they closely monitor interactions between offenders and visitors and, "We applaud our diligent staff in their commitment to ensuring the safe and secure operations of our facilities, and Investigators with our Office of Professional Standards for making the arrest."

Dubose, along with Donnie Rowe, are accused of killing Sgt. Chris Monica and Sgt. Curtis Billue in July 2017.

Investigators said Dubose and Rowe jumped the correctional officers on the prison transport bus, shot them and then broke out of the bus in Putnam County.

The officers died of their injuries.

The two were later captured in Rutherford County, Tennessee, after a three-day manhunt.
