ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Neighbors in one Rockdale County community are upset that a pit bull that attacked and killed a 7-year-old chihuahua named Buddy has been allowed to return.

Family members of the pit bull’s owner told Channel 2′s Ashli Lincoln it was an unfortunate accident and they are cooperating with the courts.

“I heard him scream a real blood-curdling doggy scream,” said Edwin Brannen, Buddy’s owner.

Brannen says he is disappointed that his dog is gone while Rockdale County Animal Control left the pit bull in its home.

“As I got to the door, I saw the female pit bull had him by the neck and throat, slinging him around and he was dead right there,” he described.

Rockdale Animal Control says the owner of the dog was issued two citations for failing to restrain the dog while off property.

Rockdale says having a dog return back to the home after an attack isn’t unusual despite the severity of the attack.

The Georgia Responsible Dog Owner Act says it’s up to a judge to decide if the dog needs to be removed from the home or euthanized.
