4-year-old boy remains in critical condition after finding gun, shooting himself in the head

SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — A 4-year-old boy remains in critical condition after he got his hands on a gun and accidentally shot himself in the head .

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes was in South Fulton County, where she spoke to the child’s family. They didn’t say much except that they think he is going to be ok.

Police are still trying to determine who the gun belonged to and who left it in a place where the child could get it.

The shooting happened Tuesday night at a home in Fairburn on Hilltop Pass. Police said the child has had several surgeries in the past few days.

There have been at least six shootings like this one in South Fulton County since 2020 where children have gotten ahold of guns. Some have died and some have survived. Either way, South Fulton Police say there are far too many tragedies like this.

South Fulton police have done several gun safety awareness events in the community warning parents about the dangers of leaving guns out.

Neighbors said they are praying for the little boy’s recovery.

“I hope people learn from this in this area, because, I have no problem with people having guns. If they wanna have guns, that’s their business, but what do you need a gun for?” a neighbor said.

Police suggest that if you have a gun in the house and there are kids around, you get the type of case that can only be opened with your fingerprint. Police say that is the safest way to store a firearm.
