East Point church helps feed seniors in need

EAST POINT, Ga. — A church is feeding hungry seniors in their South Fulton community.

So many seniors are struggling to make ends meet since so many of their services were cut during the pandemic.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes spoke to some of those seniors who need help for Christmas.

At Fellowship of Faith Church International in East Point, volunteers like little Kingston Edwards handed out food to seniors, who unfortunately are constantly worried about where their next meals are coming from.

Lila Doe said she doesn’t get the government help she used to get before COVID-19, and surviving on what little she has is difficult, especially when she wants to cook Christmas dinner for her extended family.

“We have a real food insecurity,” Doe said.

Many seniors in her building and all over metro Atlanta feel the same way.

“The average in here, like myself, only gets $23 worth of food stamps. So you know, that doesn’t buy very much,” Doe said. “I’m trying to think now of ways to get something for Christmas for my group. I call them my group ... my building.”

Vivianne Maiden works for the church and said God has called her to help seniors.

“A Social Security check is not sufficient to take care of their needs throughout the month,” Maiden said. “A lot of weight has been put on seniors for the same Social Security check they were getting before COVID, and it’s not easy, and a lot of times there’s a lack. And unless the community steps in and really realizes what’s going on with them, a lot of them are just alone and devastated.”

So as you make your Christmas plans this year, consider helping the Fellowship of Faith Church International feed seniors in our community and choose a senior community to help on your own.

You may be surprised to learn that many of them don’t have enough food to eat.

“We are the light of the world of Christ Jesus, and sharing that light upon them just gives them another day to survive, to have hope to do better,” Maiden said.
