South Fulton suspends liquor license of 3rd club in less than a year

SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — There is a crackdown on nightclubs going on all over metro Atlanta.

In the city of South Fulton, police have suspended the liquor license of another club there -- the third in less than a year.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes spoke to the club owner who said this shouldn’t be happening to her.

Burn Lounge owner Shonica Crocker said she believes she’s being treated unfairly.

Police say there have been two recent assaults in the parking lot, which is shared by at least 15 businesses.

South Fulton councilwoman Helen Willis said she doesn’t want to shut down any small business in her city, but since she was elected in 2017, she said residents have complained about illegal activity outside Burn Lounge on Roosevelt Highway.

“From day one, they asked me to close this business down,” Willis said. “Residents are very concerned about the gun violence in their community.”

South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows said a Burn Lounge employee was involved with both of the recent assaults.

The club has cameras clearly mounted on the building, but police say they don’t work and that’s a problem.

So Meadows suspended the club’s liquor license.

Crocker said she was blindsided by the suspension and that city officials tried to hold this news conference in front of her business without telling her.

She told Fernandes that her cameras work and she gave police the footage from the alleged assaults in the parking lot.

Crocker said she believes city officials are blaming her for what’s going on in the shared parking lot and she’s going to fight it.

“I don’t know what her personal vendetta is – but to loop us in and vacuum Burn Lounge in a conversation of sex trafficking or illegal activity or not caring about our community is just derogatory and defamatory and I’m completely disappointed,” Crocker said.

Crocker said the troublemakers who used to go to those clubs are now coming to the parking lot without stepping foot in her business.

Fernandes requested all the recent calls for service for Burn Lounge and police reports, but so far has not received any.
