Video shows girl being stabbed during cafeteria brawl at Creekside High School

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has obtained video showing a fight at a metro high school that ended with a girl being stabbed.

The victim’s mother told Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes she no longer feels like her daughter is safe at school.

Administrators told Fernandes they realize that it’s going to take more than just more security at Creekside High School to make sure students are protected.

They said they’re also working on de-escalation strategies for students so they can handle conflict in other ways.

The video showed more than just a fight among high school girls in the cafeteria. In the video, you can see that one student has a knife in her hand, trying to stab another girl in the back.

A 9th grader ultimately ended up with a stab wound and had to get stitches at a nearby hospital Thursday.

“I definitely feel like this was a premeditated attack. It was a terrifying moment,” the victim’s mother said, whom we are not identifying. “It was like the most heartbreaking moment ever, seeing my child fighting for her life.”

Administrators with Fulton County Schools told Fernandes that they’re aware of the violence going on across the district and specifically at Creekside High in Fairburn.

They said they “deployed more Campus Security Associates to increase adult presence and monitoring, and staff continues to work with students on de-escalating strategies including restorative circles.”

The mother of the victim said her daughter is in counseling now because she’s traumatized by the attack.

“Right now, I just don’t feel like our children are safe. I don’t. I did at one point in time, but I no longer feel like there are enough measures in place to keep our children protected on school grounds,” the mother said.

This violence issue is not new in this school district.

Fulton County Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney talked about violence in schools across the district at the last board meeting.

He said he’s working on some things that will promote student unity and really deal with the mental health issues that are causing a lot of the problems.
