Today marks the official start of Hurricane Season

ATLANTA — Today marks the official start of 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, but it’s already gotten off to a fast start!

May saw two named storms – Arthur and Bertha. The most recent seasons to have two named storms before June 1, 2012 and 2016, were both very active hurricane seasons.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan said a third tropical storm, Cristobal, is likely to develop in the Gulf of Mexico later this week.

A combination of warm ocean temperatures and weaker upper level wind patterns is expected to fuel a very active hurricane season.

The NOAA forecast for this season is for 13-19 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes, and 3-6 major hurricanes. A typical hurricane season produces 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.
