Woman shot inside her home in southwest Atlanta as bullets flew outside of her window

ATLANTA — Bullets whizzed around in the parking lot as shots were being fired at the Country Oaks apartments on Wednesday night.

Jessica Pickens says she and her children could have been killed when someone shot up her apartment. Pickens was not spared as she was hit by two of the bullets.

Picken’s home was left littered with bullet holes.

She was shocked when the bullets invaded her home. Pickens says she hit the floor when she first heard them and that’s when she was shot.

“It was going to be either me or her,” said Pickens.

Pickens couldn’t help but get emotional as she thought about how she and her one-year-old daughter could have been killed when bullets started flying into her apartment.

“I felt like I took a bullet for her,” said Pickens.

One or two of the bullets fired into Pickens’ unit at the Country Oaks apartments hit her in the backside.

She was taken to the hospital and later released.

Pickens showed Channel 2′s Tom Jones the hole that went through a wall above where her daughter was sleeping.

“My daughter could have got killed last night.”

She doesn’t believe she was the target of the shooting. Bullets hit not only her apartment but also cars in the parking lot.

Pickens says her 13- and 7-year-old kids are traumatized. She can’t understand why someone would fire so recklessly with so many kids around.

Police are investigating but that’s not enough for her. She doesn’t feel safe living in her unit and wants to move to another part of the complex.
