SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — A suspect is dead after police say they responded to an “active shooter” and barricade situation on Tuesday night in South Fulton.
Police identified the suspect as 55-year-old Eric Bates. No officers were hurt in the shooting. Flat Shoals Road remains shut down.
All the latest developments, on Channel 2 Action News This Morning starting at 4:30 a.m.
Police urged residents to avoid the area as they worked the scene throughout Tuesday night and into early Wednesday.
The shooting started off as a domestic call around 7:34 p.m. at a home on Flat Shoals Road. Police say a woman called to report her husband had shot her and had a rifle in their home.
When officers arrived, they were “immediately” met by Bates shooting at them.
“Those officers were pinned down under gunfire for a period of time. SWAT was notified. SWAT responded. Upon their response, they were able to rescue those officers who were pinned behind their vehicle,” Cedric Alexander, the city’s Interim Public Safety Director, said.

After multiple agencies responded, Alexander said Bates ran back inside the home. Police and SWAT started their protocols to try and get him to surrender peacefully.
No one was responding inside the home. Officers eventually entered the home Wednesday and said they found Bates dead inside with his gun feet away from him.
Bates’ wife was shot in the leg and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Another person inside the home got out OK and was not injured. No officers were hurt.
