Cities begin putting mask mandates back into place as COVID-19 cases surge

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — Floyd County is in the COVID-19 red zone - -and if you’re in Rome, it is now mandatory to wear a mask in public.

The mask ordinance went into effect on Tuesday.

Reactions to the ordinance seemed to be about 50/50, as some wore masks while others did not.

“I feel like I don’t need a mask per se, but I’m willing to do what’s best for the greater good,” said Rome resident Elaine Henry.

“You know, you have personal freedom and then you’ve got community,” Henry said. “So I think there’s a real struggle there.”

Rome City commissioners passed a citywide ordinance that requires face coverings in public on Tuesday.

That ordinance includes a civil penalty.

Those who do not comply with the order will get a warning and a chance to comply. If they refuse, there’s a $25 fine. A second offense will cost $50.

Co-owner of Living and Giving Gift Shop, Lisa Landry, said she has some concerns about COVID-19.

“As a grandmother, I’m concerned for my grandchildren, myself, my family and the families here in Floyd County,” Landry said.

Masks are only required in public spaces.

Businesses and churches can opt out, but they have to post a sign.

Other cities have also implemented mask mandates recently. Covington put a mandate into place earlier this week.
