In new letter, Morgan Wallen says “I’ve really worked on myself” after racial slur video

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Months after a video surfaced of him using a racial slur, country music star Morgan Wallen penned a letter to fans saying he “feels like I’ve really worked on myself” and thanked fans for their support.

Wallen posted the four-page letter on his social accounts Tuesday night.

TMZ published a video in February that showed the singer outside his Nashville home yelling profanities and a racial slur. Wallen could be heard telling a friend to “take care of this ... (slur),” an apparent reference to another person in his group.

The 27-year-old described 2020 as a tough year that carried into 2021.

“I’ve made some mistakes, I’m figuring those out, and I apologized because I was truly sorry and have been making my amends,” Wallen wrote.

“I wanted to let you guys know that I’ve taken a couple months away and feel like I’ve really worked on myself. I’m proud of the work I’ve put in and in many ways thankful to have had the time off to do it.”

The backlash was immediate after the racial slur video. Wallen’s label suspended him and radio stations stopped playing his music. Other country stars issued statements saying Wallen’s video does not reflect country music.

But many of his fans responded as his two albums saw a surge in sales and his sophomore album returned to top of some music charts, the AP reported.

In his letter posted Tuesday, Wallen said that he will continue to take time off and does not plan to promote the album with his previous summer tour dates. Wallen was slated to play summer festivals and open for Luke Bryan’s tour, which has had dates rescheduled.

“I found this time away to be very valuable to me in many ways, but I feel like I need a little more of it,” he wrote. “But it’s important to me personally if you can still go to these shows and support country music.”
