The recalls were announced in a news release issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recall applies to pedals on bikes sold between July 2013 and May 2016, the CPSC said. The recall affected 27,000 bicycles, according to The New York Times.

According to the CPSC, the PR70P Clip-In Pedals “can break unexpectedly” during use, causing “laceration injuries.”

According to the CPSC release, Peloton has received 120 reports of pedals breaking on the stationary bikes, and 16 reports of leg injuries. Five of those injuries required medical care, including stitches to the victims' lower leg.

The bikes, at $1,895 plus a $39 monthly subscription fee for access to livestreamed classes, are some of the most expensive on the market, the Times reported.

“We take pride in providing the best equipment, proprietary networked software, and world-class streaming digital fitness and wellness content that our members love,” Amelise Lane, a spokesperson for Peloton, said in a statement.

Peloton is notifying all affected consumers directly on how to receive free replacement pedals, along with instructions for self-installation, the CPSC said.

Consumers can also call Peloton toll-free at (844) 410-0141 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. EDT on weekends.
