No illnesses linked to the muffins have been reported, and Give and Go confirmed that an environmental monitoring program revealed the potential for products to be contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause listeriosis.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeriosis can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weakened immune systems.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, the recall notice stated.

Consumers are advised to dispose of the potentially tainted products immediately. Give and Go can be reached by calling 1-844-366-1171, with consumer relations assistance available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
