Atlanta United hires 3x MLS Cup champion as its new president, CEO

ATLANTA — The search for the next Atlanta United president and CEO is over.

Atlanta United announced Tuesday that it has hired Garth Lagerwey to take over the organization. Lagerwey, a three-time MLS Cup champion and Concacaf Champions League champion, previously worked as the general manager and president for the Seattle Sounders.

“I see the opportunity to lead Atlanta United as a dream come true for me,” Lagerwey said. “The opportunity to take on the chief executive role at a club with incredible ownership, unmatched resources and infrastructure, and the amazing fan support this club has enjoyed from the start, all made this move the perfect next step in my career. Honestly, it’s the chance of a lifetime and I could not be more excited to get to Atlanta and get to work.”

The team said Lagerwey’s contract is several years, but did not release specifics on how long it’s for or how much he will make with the club.

Lagerwey knows how to succeed in MLS. He served as general manager for Real Salt Lake, which won its only title in 2009 during his tenure. When he moved to Seattle, success followed him.

The Sounders the 2016 and 2019 MLB Cup and became the first MLS team to win the Concacaf Champions League in 2022.

Atlanta United will hold a news conference to introduce Lagerwey on Nov. 29.
