GA man plans to sue after he says police used stun gun on him and his horse during Christmas parade

MURRAY COUNTY, Ga. — Chatsworth police said a man on a horse was arrested while intoxicated during a Christmas parade.

But the man claims he wasn’t intoxicated and plans to sue police after he says an officer used a stun gun on both him and his horse.

Gabe Carrell told a WTVC reporter that he was asking a man who was driving a fire truck in the parade to “chill out with the siren” because horses were getting spooked by the noise. “And the next thing I know, I’m on the ground in handcuffs,” he said.

In a police report, a Chatsworth officer wrote that it was “immediately apparent that Mr. Carrell was intoxicated by the influence of liquor or any drug.”

But Carrell and his daughter Montana say that wasn’t the case.

“He wasn’t intoxicated, and I talked to him after he wasn’t intoxicated. He was very mad, but he was not intoxicated,” she said.

The police report says an officer fired a stun gun at Carrell, “...striking Mr. Carrell through his vest directly between his shoulder line where the shot placement was intended. And while the lower probe has not yet been recovered or confirmed whether it struck the saddle or the horse,” Montana Carrell said there’s no doubt it hit her horse, Katniss.

“Her leg’s swollen where the Taser prong went in. And there’s the vet said there’s no infection in that yet, but we do need to keep a close eye on it. And we need to keep a close eye on her because there’s no telling what the effects of a taser has on a horse,” Montana Carrell said.

She says her horse has acted differently ever since.

“Since this, she’s a completely different horse. She doesn’t want anybody around her. She doesn’t like anybody touching her,” she said.

Both Carrell and his daughter say they plan on taking legal action.

“Justice will be served,” she said.

The Chatsworth police chief said the officer was not wearing a body camera during the incident.
