Teens were stealing package off porch when Atlanta homeowner shot them, police say

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating after two people were shot on Thursday afternoon.

Officers were called to an apartment complex on Celeste Lane SW off of Benjamin E. Mays Drive SW just after 3:30 p.m.NewsChopper 2 flew over the complex and saw a large number of police units and crime scene tape near the entrance.

A 15-year-old was shot in the right foot and taken to the hospital, Channel 2’s Tom Regan learned. They say he is stable.

Another victim was shot in the right arm and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Investigators say he has not been identified, but they believe he is also a juvenile.

Police say the two victims were attempting to steal a package off the home’s porch when the homeowner caught them.

That’s when police say the homeowner shot them. He is cooperating with the investigation.

“It’s just a very sad and unfortunate situation,” said resident Israel Dortch. “I was up in my room, heard a gunshot went out on the balcony and I saw paramedics assisting somebody.”

Police and prosecutors are still working to determine if the homeowner will face charges.

In October, bullets rang out in the same community. Maurice Bradley, 19, died. Another teenager was injured.

“The October shooting, that case is very active, and we anticipate holding people accountable for that one as well,” Schierbaum said.

“It’s getting crazy out here,” said resident Zion Dortch.
