ATLANTA — May is National Foster Care Month and here in Georgia there are more than 11,000 children in foster care.
An Atlanta nonprofit group aims to get more families to foster children.
Atlanta Angels are making sure families have the support from the community to welcome a child into their home.

Channel 2′s Heather Catlin joined Atlanta Angels at their Sunshine Festival this past weekend.
Co-founder and Executive Director of Atlanta Angels, Christie Simons, says the festival is about celebrating, but the nonprofit is all about helping foster families.
“So Atlanta Angels wraps support around the foster care community because there is a lack of support,” Simons said. “Foster care is really hard for everyone who experiences it. What we do is provide intentional relation support throughout the year for these kids and youth in foster care.”
Tim Black is a foster parent.
He hopes to encourage others to open their doors to those most in need.
“There are so many kids in our state and county that they just don’t have anywhere to go. There are kids in hotel rooms because there’s not enough foster parents,” Black said.

Black gets support through Atlanta Angels.
People can provide babysitting, act as an aunt or uncle, or even send care packages.
“A lot of friends say, ‘I could never do what you’re doing.’ That’s not true. You have the capacity to do exactly what we’re doing,” Black said. “And maybe you can’t bring a child into your home but you can come alongside a foster parent or adoptive parent and support them.”
“We do believe that everyone can do something to make a difference,” Simons said.
