LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Moments after sweeping the three biggest rap categories at the 2024 Grammy Awards, Atlanta rapper Killer Mike was detained and later arrested by Los Angeles police.

Now a year later, the rapper, whose real name is Michael Render, has filed a civil suit claiming he was illegally detained.

The arrest stemmed from an alleged incident inside Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles where the award ceremony was being held.

In the lawsuit filed Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Render, 49, alleges his civil rights were violated when he was detained by private security firm S&S Labor Force.

Render told Channel 2′s Karyn Greer that he was celebrating winning three Grammys with his team when security got a little “overzealous.” He was released a few hours after being detained.

Through an attorney, the security company denied any wrongdoing to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
