The Moores Mill Road bridge over Peachtree Creek has been closed since October after a heavy vehicle hitting the bridge damaged its structural support and a water line.

The target completion date for the work is now Dec. 16, which accounts for weather delays, says Dustin Hillis, who represents District 9.

He said the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management is working to “repair a valve on a major water main supplying approximately 20% of Atlanta.”

The work on the valve has to happen during the hours when water demand is the lowest, late night or early morning.

Hillis said the Atlanta Department of Transportation has completed some stabilization work already, including placing riprap rock. But the agency will build a temporary stabilization wall to help support the structure during repairs.

The contractor, CW Matthews, will complete major repairs remain to the bridge’s wing and buttress wall, stormwater drainage system and other infrastructure, Hillis said.

“I know this closure continues to cause significant disruptions for the area, and I’ll keep pushing for the quickest possible safe reopening,” Hillis said in a social media post.

“Meanwhile, I remain committed to pursuing a full replacement of this century-old bridge to address its narrow, old design and long-standing pedestrian safety, and flooding concerns.”
