ATLANTA — The City of Atlanta celebrated the new Midtown bike lane barrier mural project along Piedmont Park on Tuesday.
The long stretch of concrete barriers protects bicyclists and others who use the lanes.
Robert Nickolai is an avid bicyclist. He said the safety improvements along 10th Street in Midtown Atlanta are essential.

“I think me getting away from cars, getting a little bit of protection against cars is essential for me to feel protected and want to be biking here in the first place,” Nickolai said.
Members of Atlanta’s Department of Transportation and the mayor’s office, including Mayor Andre Dickens, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the project on Tuesday.
Their hope is that it will reduce vehicle traffic in one of the busiest areas of the city while protecting bicyclists and pedestrians.
“This project has created spaces that encourage more Atlantans and our visitors to choose bicycles,” Dickens said.
In 2013, Atlanta built a cycle lane right next to the sidewalks along 10th Street to offer protection for bicyclists and others using micro-mobility modes of transportation like electric scooters, skateboards, and kick scooters.
But without barriers, accidents still happened.
So the city came up with the idea to install 300 low-profile concrete barriers along the street between Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive.
The city also wanted to create a vibrant look with beautiful murals to line the corridor that connects to the BeltLine’s East Side Trail.
It was a community project with residents taking part in creating the art in October and November.
“I’m pretty happy with it. I’m happy with the colors, I’m happy with the little artistic features,” Nickolai said.
The project is part of Atlanta’s Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate traffic deaths and injuries.
