ATLANTA — Atlanta homicide detectives returned Thursday to the scene of a double shooting near the Oakland City MARTA Station that left one 16-year-old dead and another wounded.

“There were rapid guns shots, ‘Pow, pow, pow.’ I heard the mother there was screaming, saying her son was shot. That someone shot him and he had shot somebody.” said neighbor Arista Phinnizee.

APD’s Homicide Commander Andrew Smith told Channel 2 the teen who was killed fired the first shot, wounding the other teen in the buttocks. That teen returned fire, fatally shooting the teen who fired first.

The shooting happened near townhomes on Oakland Drive. A witness told Channel 2‘s Tom Regan he saw the teens yelling at each other near the MARTA station moments before the shooting.

“I couldn’t hear what they were arguing about. I was just trying to stay out of the way. I didn’t want to be caught in between.” Brandon Cardenas said.

Cardenas says moments later, he heard 10-12 gun shots.

Police haven’t released the name of either of the teens involved. The one taken to Grady Hospital was reported to be in stable condition.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation, and there is no word yet if charges will be filed.
