Douglasville woman reflects on friendship with the Carters

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. — When looking for the true testimony of Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s impact on humanity, you can start on a front porch in Douglasville.

“Let me see. In 1970, I was working in the yard right out here in this yard, and a car stopped at the sidewalk, and this man walked into the yard,” Dot Padgett told Channel 2′s Courtney Francisco. “He looked straight at me with those beautiful blue eyes, and he said, ‘Would you help me? I’m running for governor.’”

Padgett said she said yes, and she was there working side-by-side with the Carters all the way through the White House.

“Anything that I hear now, it goes right back to Jimmy Carter,” Padgett said. “He was a man way ahead of his time.”

She said she and the First Lady became long-lasting friends.

“I feel, almost, like I’m a member of the family,” Padgett said.

She flipped through old photos of her time with the Carters Sunday evening.

“When that man walked into my life, he changed my life, added a dimension to my life, and I think over and over again that has been what he’s done for the entire world,” Padgett said.
