Fire at Atlanta nonprofit’s warehouse destroys furniture, mattresses it planned to donate

ATLANTA — A nonprofit that helps Atlanta’s most vulnerable families is now struggling themselves after a fire broke out at their facility early Wednesday morning.

Atlanta Fire officials say the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta on Murphy Avenue caught fire around 4 a.m. while the business was closed.

Rescue Battalion Chief Arzel Bostick II says crews faced challenges locating the fire’s origin due to the hundreds of pieces of furniture inside.

“A lot of furniture was stacked from the floor to the ceiling. We had to remove that, and once we did, we got the fire under control,” explained Chief Bostick.

The executive director of the non-profit, Megan Anderson, said they had just received hundreds of dressers from a UGA dorm, as well as hundreds of mattresses.

“We’ve got families coming today who have been waiting to get their furniture,” Anderson said.

The firefight lasted several hours, and one firefighter required medical attention.

“We had a firefighter who was a little dehydrated. We had to pull him out of the building and get him to the hospital. He’s being evaluated by Grady, just as a precaution,” said Atlanta Fire PIO Anaré Holmes.

Neighboring business owners watched as crews worked the scene throughout the morning.

Pouya Dianat, owner of CreateATL and president of the Adair Park neighborhood association, said he has been a business neighbor of the non-profit for over a decade.

“It’s hard—especially when it happens to good people. They’ve helped so many over the years. It’s tough to see this,” said Dianat.

While a substantial amount of furniture was lost in the fire, the non-profit’s mission to serve others remains strong.

“I know that we’ve been through a lot before as an organization, and our mission is really important. So, we’ll figure it out,” said Anderson.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
