ATLANTA — Citing colorful history and traditions in Georgia, and acknowledging food and legacy have long been tied together in the state, four members of the Georgia House of Representatives introduced legislation to make cornbread the official state bread.
“The colorful history and traditions of the State of Georgia are inextricably associated with the food traditions of corn and among the many legacies of this proud heritage is the delicious bread known as cornbread,” the legislation reads.
As far as history, House Bill 14 says that cornbread has “transcended its humble origins” as a food relied upon by indigenous people for sustenance and now occupies “a place of honor at such events as the Prater’s Mill Country Fair in Whitfield County.”
The bill text mentions how thousands of people use cornbread cooked on wood-burning stoves in celebrations, serving it with collard greens and pinto beans, and that corn is grown, ground and made into cornmeal at historic mills in the state.
“Cornbread enjoys a singular stature in Georgia history and culture that is rivaled only by its undeniable appeal as a versatile and satisfying food,” adding that “accordingly, it is abundantly fitting and proper that cornbread be designated as the official Georgia state bread so as to fully recognize the importance of this product to this state,” as reason for the proposed upgrade to cornbread’s status.
As a result, four lawmakers are hoping to make the baked good one of the state’s official symbols and bake it more fully into the state’s history.
