ATLANTA — Former President Jimmy Carter has made his final journey to the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.
Tuesday’s schedule includes a departure ceremony from the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta; a departure ceremony from Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia; an arrival ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland; a funeral procession from the U.S. Navy Memorial to the U.S. Capitol; and an arrival ceremony and service at the U.S. Capitol.
The beloved former president is now lying in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
The American public can pay their final respects to the president from 7:00 p.m. until midnight on Tuesday. Public viewing resumes at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday and runs through 7:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Military body bearers will carry the former president’s body into the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, where he will lie in state.
3:50 p.m. Carter family begins funeral procession to U.S. Capitol
Members of the Carter family are beginning a funeral procession with former President Carter’s casket on a horse-drawn caisson from the U.S. Navy Memorial to the U.S. Capitol.
The route mirrors the route the former first family took for an inaugural parade on Jan. 20, 1977.
3:30 p.m. Transfer ceremony begins at U.S. Navy Memorial
During the ceremony, former President Carter’s casket will be removed from the hearse as ceremonial troops present arms and “Hail to the Chief” is played. The U.S. Navy Band will play the hymn “Just As I Am.”
His casket will be placed onto a horse-drawn caisson and some of his family members will line up to walk along the funeral procession route to the U.S. Capitol.

At the U.S. Navy Memorial, a transfer ceremony will take place where former President Carter’s remains will be placed into a horse-drawn caisson and taken along a funeral procession that mirrors his inaugural parade he and his family walked on Jan. 20, 1977.
2:30 p.m. Arrival ceremony beginning at Joint Base Andrews
The Carter family is preparing for an arrival ceremony at Joint Base Andrews in Washington, D.C.
Troops will present arms as “Hail to the Chief” plays and a 21-gun salute.
The U.S. Air Force Band will play “Abide with Me” as former President Carter’s remains are loaded into the hearse.

Special Air Mission 39, which is carrying former President Carter’s remains and family, has arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Washington, D.C.
12:43 p.m. Special Air Mission 39 departs with Carter’s remains and the family
Special Air Mission 39 has departed from Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Cobb County. The flight will now head to Joint Andrews Base for a transfer ceremony in Washington, D.C.
12:24 p.m. Carter boards Special Air Mission 39
The plane will soon depart for Washington, D.C.
12:20 p.m.
The U.S. Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence Band plays “Nearer my God, to Thee” as the body bearer team carries the late president’s remains to the aircraft loader.
Carter’s children, Jack, Chip, Jeff and Amy and their families follow the body bearer team.
12:17 p.m. The ceremony begins
A 21-gun salute and sections of “Hail to the Chief” are played before the casket is loaded onto the plane.
12:09 p.m. What will happen during the departure ceremony?
Ceremonial troops will present arms and render honors with four Ruffles and Flourishes, Hail to the Chief and a 21-gun salute.
Immediately following honors, the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence Band begins playing Nearer My God, to Thee. On the first note of the hymn, the body bearer team carries the late president’s remains through the honor cordon to the aircraft loader. Order of march: national color, clergy, body bearer team with Carter’s remains, and presidential color.

The motorcade is passing Truist Park, home of Carter’s favorite baseball team the Atlanta Braves. Carter was often spotted catching a game at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and Turner Field, including this special Kiss Cam moment with his late wife Rosalynn.
11:26 a.m. Motorcade enters the downtown connector
The motorcade is getting onto I-75/I-85 northbound to make its way to Cobb County.
11:14 a.m.
The motorcade has departed the Carter Center to begin Carter’s final journey from Atlanta to the nation’s capitol.
At Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Carter’s family will be joined by their friends, the Carter Center Board of Councilors, Gov. Brian Kemp and other local elected officials.
11:10 a.m. Carter family lines up for procession

12:45 p.m. – Special Air Mission 39 departs for Washington.

4:10 p.m. – The funeral procession begins marching up to the U.S. Capitol via Pennsylvania Avenue, turning left onto Constitution Avenue. Upon arrival at the U.S. Capitol, the late president is carried up the stairs by military body bearers and into the Rotunda.
4:30 p.m. – Congress pays their respects during a service in the Rotunda.
6 p.m. – Carter begins lying in state while the military maintains a guard of honor.
6 p.m. to midnight – Lying in state opens to the public.
