Mourners continue to pay their respects to Jimmy Carter at Carter Presidential Center

ATLANTA — Droves of people showed up at Carter Presidential Center on Monday to pay their respects to former President Jimmy Carter.

Ekrem Dimbiloglu remembers Carter’s impact from his childhood years.

“President Carter is just a decent man and was a role model for so many young folks, me included when I was growing up. I think we need more folks like President Carter,” Dimbiloglu said.

Elizabeth Omilami with Hosea Helps was witness to the relationship Jimmy Carter had with her father, civil rights activist Hosea Williams.

“They came together on the things they agreed on and the things they didn’t they had spirited conversations about it and remained friends,” said Omilami who recalls one of her key memories of Carter was right after the Carter Center opened.

“I was looking for the tour guide. Well, the tour guide was President Jimmy Carter. I was just shocked,” remembered Omilami.

When it comes to the Carter Center, Dr. Kenneth Stein was one of the original Carter Center employees.

He worked with the former president in the 80s, traveling to the Middle East with him many times and meeting with international leaders.

He remembers times where Carter was full of humor, but other times he described him as frustrating because he was so self-assured.

“Throughout his life, Carter believed and he truly believed that if a subsequent president asked him to be the mediator on the Middle East, he believed he could make it happen. He had so much confidence in his ability because he had done it once with Begin and Sadat he thought he could do it again,” Stein said.
