ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting involving a police officer after a man tried to break into his patrol car.
The investigation started Sunday morning when someone tried to break into the car of Fulton County Police Corporal Damion Allen.
According to the county, Allen confronted someone at the Heritage Station Apartment complex in Atlanta, where he provides security.
The person trying to break into Allen’s patrol vehicle charged at him with a metal pipe, Allen opened fire in self-defense, and the person with the metal pipe died.
Channel 2’s Bryan Mims was at the scene at McDaniel Street, where neighbors said it all started with a suspicious man they saw on the property.
Neighbors told Channel 2 Action News that the incident started after they saw a suspicious man walking around the apartment complex.

The neighbor said a Fulton County Police officer who lived there was told about the suspicious man and went to go speak to him.
After a discussion, neighbors told Mims that shots were fired. Mims learned the officer was not injured.
Police confirmed to Mims that the shooting was officer-involved and fatal, though other details were not yet available.
At the crime scene, police tape is visible in multiple areas around the Heritage Station Apartments.

Officers from the Fulton County Police Department were at the location speaking with witnesses.
Mims said a Fulton County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was also on scene, though the office said they are not involved in the investigation.
Atlanta police officials also said they are not investigating the incident, and referred Channel 2 Action News to speak with the Fulton County Police Department.
The incident remains under investigation. The individual killed has not been identified.
