Something for everyone: What and where are the New Years Celebrations in Georgia

Why a possum? It actually has to do with the city's history. The town was named Possum Snout before it was incorporated in the 1800's. That's where the idea behind the Possum Drop originated.

ATLANTA — There are as always, plenty of things to do in Metro Atlanta and the State of Georgia if you are looking to celebrate the end of 2024 and welcome in 2025.

They range from fireworks to the dropping of various items to family events for the kids and stretch the length and width of the Peach State.

For those looking for a more unique event:

Tallapoosa Possum Drop: No, the city does not drop an actual possum to ring in the new year. They use one that has been Taxidermized. The outdoor celebration will have plenty of food and drink and fireworks for those waiting to see the stuffed possum ring in 2025. Festivities kick off at 6 p.m.

Perry Buzzard Drop: If you want to make the trip south, the City of Perry will hold its annual Buzzard Drop. The event which is downtown, will feature live music, food and drink along with a countdown for the kids beginning at 8 p.m. The Buzzard, which we believe is also stuffed, will drop at the stroke of midnight.

Forsythia Ball Drop: If you want to go south, but closer to Atlanta, there is the Ball Drop in the City of Forsyth (Monroe County). The city will hold a block party on the Courthouse Square starting at 8 p.m. and ending after the ball drops.
